Basic Herbalism, Using Herbs and Spices

The Herb People

I see herbalism as a sort of self sufficiency project. When I putz around the house and there is a child with a cough, I need a multi vitamin, or I notice something wrong I just go and brew up a cure instead of running to the store and really not knowing what I will end up with. To be sure I always have 40 or 50 mason jars around the house with different herbs in them and I have many different oils, but I know that I save a lot of money and come out with a better product by making what I need myself.

As I write articles in my Basic Herbalism series, I realized that many people do not have any idea of the ways that Herbs and Spices are used not just in Herbalism, but in our everyday lives. I also realize that I tend to use a sort of Herbal Vocabulary when I am writing these articles. Below I have included some clues to what I am talking about, these are part definition and part reasons to use different methods in herbalism (or Folk Medicine if you prefer).

These are some of the types of products we can (and often do) make for ourselves;
My current plans are to write articles on all of the above subjects, watch for them here or at my website!

It's a nice reminder that all of our ills don't have to be cured with something dyed red or orange or tasting of bubble gum. It's good to get back to our roots, so to speak. ~s

LOL... No, we use honey and Sassafras root to make it taste like Root Beer... I'm kidding about that, but it is something that could be done, add a little Saffron for yellow #3... hmm maybe some vanilla for brown and some Pomegranate for red...

Nice article, Michael, thank you. It is so easy to make our own medicines from herbs. If I have a headache, rather than taking paracetamol, i put a couple of heads of lavender into a pot and brew a lovely cup of lavender tea. Delicious and healing.

Hmmm... If I ever suggested anything for A headache, I would probably fall back to the 4000 year standard of Willow Bark, but Lavender is great for Migraines, it just isn't the first thing that pops in my head....

You might be surprised at what you could find out, for Instance Basil is listed as having the following "Actions" ;

antidepressant, antiseptic, stimulates the adrenal cortex, prevents vomiting, tonic, carminative, febrifuge, expectorant, soothes itching.

If you want more information just search (for instance) "the febriguge action of herbs" or "the tonic action of Basil" The word "Action" is important in searches because it lets the search engines know you are looking for a Medicinal use.

Interesting article. I think that herbal medicines are still better than those medicines that can be bought in the pharmacy. =)

I would term them as an alternative to the pharmacy, not better, not worse, but you do need to take responsibility for your health with herbs.

In the Pharmacy, if you're smart, you ask the Pharmacist and there is not much knowledge needed. With herbal remedies you have more control and you can make better quality items, but you can also make a mistake, so you are required to know more and it can also take more time.

In the Spring and Summer though you can Wildcraft your medicine for free if you didn't spray it with weed killer....

Hello Mr. Michael,
Yours is a fantastic article about using inexpensive herbal treatment at home. May be you know that we, the South Indians, use herbal medicines at home for generations, instead of rushing to the physician every time. More so for the health of our infants, we depend upon herbs only at home. Elders - grandmas particularly - at home insist upon this, irrespective of the opposition of the menfolk, considering themselves "modern". Thanks for enlightening the readers about the importance of herbalism.
